Insulation Packages

  • Our Basic Insulation Package keeps your yurt warm in winter and cool in summer, with sewn wall panels and separate roof insulation for flexibility. For extreme climates, boost your yurt’s R-value with our exclusive Arctic Insulation—an added layer of flexible foam that improves energy efficiency and comfort in the harshest environments.

Fabric Options

  • Your yurt, your style. Choose from a wide variety of wall and roof colors to match your environment and taste. For the roof, pick between our ProShield fabric (8-year warranty) or the premium Duro-Last (15-year warranty). For walls, go with Starfire (5-year warranty, sewn seams) or upgrade to Star800 (8-year warranty, welded seams and easy-clean finish).

Bottom Hook & Loop Attachments

  • Every Shelter Designs yurt wall comes with grommets spaced every foot around the bottom of the exterior wall to securely anchor the fabric to the floor frame. Take the next step to fully seal the bottom of your wall and keep out stray drafts and those creepy crawlies! This SD exclusive feature connects the wall to the floor frame with 2” hook and loop around the entire bottom perimeter, providing the ultimate seal from the elements.

Central Column

  • This is a central pole designed to support the roof in extreme loading conditions. This option is ideal when the yurt is mostly unoccupied or is not maintained during harsh winter conditions. Please call to see if this option is right for you.

Stainless Steel Hardware

  • Upgrade your hardware to stainless steel for extreme maritime conditions.

Bottom Splash Band

  • Spruce up the look of your yurt while adding extra protection from splashing water and snow accumulation! We make the bottom 18” of your wall with 15-year DuroLast fabric, adding an attractive look and practical protection from the elements.

Snow & Wind Kit

  • The snow and wind kit consist of upright supports under each roof rafter, and a cable blocking system in the rafters. The upright supports are attached to the rafters, lattice and floor. These structural components increases the yurt’s ability to withstand extreme load conditions.

Stovepipe Flashing Kit

  • Our easy to install flashing kit will be made to fit the size of pipe that you need (up to 8” in diameter). Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page to see what heating option is best for you.

Perimeter Blocking

  • Perimeter blocking is a horizontal block line of 2×4 blocks that are installed at the top of the wall between the snow and wind legs.  This simple structural upgrade provides a substantial boost to the snow and wind loading capabilities of your yurt.

Center Ring Screen Insert

  • Maintain a bug free environment in your yurt while still benefiting from an open skylight for maximum ventilation.

Dome Opener & Tinted Dome

  • These are our most popular options. Opening the skylight allows for maximum ventilation, drawing hot air out of your living space. The tinted dome provides a significant shield from the hot sun, keeping your yurt cooler, while still providing a view the blue sky, white clouds, and trees.

Fan Mount

  • Keep the air circulating in your yurt by installing a ceiling fan. This attractive mount has an electrical box mortised into it for mounting most types of ceiling fans.

Insulated Window Coverings

FAQs

April 2025: We are currently experiencing quick turnaround times and are estimating around 6-8 weeks from time of order to completion.
We are not a yurt factory, and we make each wood yurt component from the finest, strongest materials available. In most instances, your yurt is made to order. For instance, we use 28 separate pieces of lumber and 128 screws to build our custom door frames. Our door header has a 3 layer laminate, with the top layer being Red Oak. The bottom plate has a 1/2″ of cedar for extra moisture protection. Such detail cannot be rushed!

We require a 50% deposit when your order is placed. Notice of final payment due will be given 10 days prior to the date the yurt is scheduled for shipping or pick up. We accept cash, check, debit, and all major credit cards. When a debit or credit card is used there will be a 3% transaction fee.

We often get questions about whether we finance our yurts. At this time we do not offer financing. We suggest talking with your small local bank about financing your yurt in a similar way that cars are financed. As always, having adequate collateral is helpful!

Yes—you need to insulate your yurt. We recommend our Basic Insulation Package for most locations and uses. It includes a lightweight, reflective thermal barrier that helps retain heat while your heat source is running—ideal for occasional use or 3-season living in moderate climates. For colder environments or full-time use, our exclusive Arctic Insulation adds a ½” foam layer to boost heat retention and comfort. While no yurt will perform like a traditional home, these options help moderate interior temperatures and make your space more livable year-round. We also suggest insulating your platform and considering additional heat sources or climate control tools like wood stoves or mini-split units for maximum comfort.

We ship yurts to all 50 states and offer international shipping as well. For those within 300 miles of Missoula, Montana, renting a trailer or U-Haul is often more cost-effective than freight delivery. International shipments are delivered to the nearest port, with the buyer responsible for duties, fees, and final transport.

Shipping costs depend on yurt size, window and door types, and location—we’re happy to provide an estimate. All shipped yurts require a crate fee: $700 for standard packages, with an added $200 for glass windows and $300 for SIPS floors. Crate fees are waived for local pickups. Yurts must be picked up within two weeks of completion to avoid storage fees.

Delivery is handled via LTL freight or flatbed truck; you’ll need a forklift on-site and access for a full-size semi. While we don’t offer installation, we can recommend experienced installers. Most customers work with local contractors for platform builds and setup, and we provide detailed video guides to help you every step of the way.

Every area of the country has different requirements for building.  Yurts have been classified as permanent, semi-permanent or temporary structures depending on the location and use. It is the purchaser’s responsibility to fully research local codes and inform us of all requirements for compliance before the yurt is ordered.  Engineering data is available for all Big Sky Yurt Models from Shelter Designs. You may have to hire a local engineer review our plans and approve them.

Montana does not have a general-use sales tax.  Therefore, Shelter Designs, LLC is not required to, and does not, collect sales or use tax on yurts or yurt accessories picked up at our facility in Missoula, Montana.  However, following a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision, many states now require out-of-state vendors that do not have a physical presence in their state to collect and remit the taxes on sales of products delivered into their state.  Shelter Designs, LLC may not know at the time of a particular sale whether the sale will cause Shelter Designs, LLC to exceed the threshold of activity for your particular state.  We, therefore, reserve the right to add sales tax if required by your state.  Customers who are exempt from sales tax must provide Shelter Designs, LLC with the appropriate exemption certificate to avert the collection of sales taxes.  Customers in states that we do not collect sales taxes for may be subject to a use tax in that state.  It is the customer’s responsibility to report and pay the use tax where required.
